Bombs Bursting At Night

November 17, 2017

Oh say can you see

The man

by the dawns early light

Sitting on the pavement

what so proudly we hailed

Vietnam Vet’s cap on

at the twilight’s last gleaming

Accepting anything you have to offer

In the land of the free and the home of the brave

Our veterans are heralded as heroes on Veterans Day

When the day’s over

those feelings fade

& celebrating their sacrifice

turns to annoyance as

Patriots in the truest sense

sit outside of storefronts

Post up in public parks

& struggle to make a life

After the war

Because of bombs bursting in the air

PTSD is still there

So is substance abuse

This common coping method highlights

the perilous fight that is just beginning for some

as they settle into life under the bright stars

strapped with their broad bags & nowhere to go

Walk around any major city

In the land of the free and home of the brave

& you’ll see that our flag is still there

flying high above

Veterans asking for help

From their country

From the citizens

From all of those who

Sing the star spangled banner
